The 28-year-old, who can play as a left winger or at left-back, has struggled with fitness problems since joining the Cottagers from Sunderland last summer, making 12 appearances this season.
Richardson has been capped eight times for England but the last of those appearances came in 2006.
He is back from a calf injury for Saturday's trip to his old club at the Stadium of Light and Jol hopes the ex-Manchester United man can start getting back to his best.
The manager said: "Kieran has been injured a bit but he is back now and will be involved in the squad. He is a versatile player who can play on the left, in midfield and left-back.
"He is a good player and has all the qualities.
"He had a good season with Steve Bruce at Sunderland when he was left-back, and should be terrific here.
"You can give him the licence there to express himself and he will be good, I have no doubt about that."
